Cal-The Wonder Dog has a great photo of some baby finches. China is hunting field mice in the disguise of a hyena. Pimm is tracking down the elusive Ivory-billed woodpecker - BBC NEWS. Just to name a few. Not to be left out, a pair house finches have built a nest near our front door. Unfortunately the eggs/chicks will be heard and not seen for a while. I will try to keep my keen ears clean and at attention while I catch some rays in the front doorway. Just for the record here are a few photos of home and the parents.

Pop or 'Dracula'?' (I sneezed when I hit the shutter.)
Even some famous Beatles beetles are getting into the swing of spring. The dailyrepublic.com has a story about our Delta Green Ground Beetle - Elaphrus viridis . The article tells of the importance of vernal pools to the DGGB and Jepson Prairie where the beetle lives. So far our county is its only home. At ContraCostaTimes.com there is an article about bird nest forms and materials - copper wire, plastic, TP, etc. Very interesting. (Unfortunately their articles are available for only a limited time and you may have to open a free account to read them.)
This talk of chicks and eggs brings to mind the over worked question, 'Which came first, the chicken or... I think I'll leave that until the next post.

Nice shot of the mama. The dad is definitely doing his best Drac imitation, great catch on that snap.
Interesting about the Delta Green Ground Beetle. And about what came first, could it be that they both came into being simultaneously? You never hear anyone mentioning that possibility . . .
Have to go, my human is unwrapping a Greenie treat!!!
